Learn More About Venetian Plaster

What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian Plaster is a thin decorative coating applied in multiple layers, trowelled and polished to achieve either a high-gloss or matte finish. When polished to a high gloss, it creates the illusion of depth and texture while offering enhanced durability and resistance to wear.

What is Venetian plaster made of?

Venetian plasters are usually made of lime, marble dust, pigments and water. Some plasters also contain acrylic or synthetic binders to enhance durability and ease of application.

What is the difference between Venetian plaster and regular plaster?

The main difference between plaster and quality Venetian plaster is the ingredients.

Plaster is made from gypsum, while Venetian plaster is a mixture of plaster and marble or limestone dust, making it more durable and longer-lasting.

Can you apply Venetian plaster on wood?

Venetian plaster can be applied to surfaces of various materials, including wood. It's important that the surface is in good condition, free from cracks and either primed or painted with a flat sheen.

Can you use Venetian plaster on MDF?

We would not recommend plastering directly onto an MDF board. While MDF is a fairly hard material it's also very sensitive to moisture, and the water in the plaster will likely be absorbed by the MDF board. It is, however, possible to apply plaster to MDF if you first prepare the MDF by applying a suitable primer or sealer.

Can you use Venetian plaster on a fireplace?

Traditional Venetian plaster made with lime and marble dust is naturally heat-resistant, making it a very suitable finish for fireplaces. Use heat-resistant primers or materials specifically rated for high temperatures in areas closest to the firebox.
