The World’s First EPD From a Pre-Verified LCA Tool for Coated Abrasive Products
Every product has a journey, beginning with raw material extraction and continuing through transportation, manufacturing, distribution, use, and ultimately end of life. At each stage, decisions are made that shape products environmental impact. Yet understanding and communicating that impact has not always been easy.
To address this challenge and bring greater transparency to the industry, Mirka has, through dedicated development work, received approval for the world’s first pre‑verified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool for generating EPDs for coated abrasive products.
As a first result of this work, Mirka has published a third-party verified EPD for the Gold sanding disc.
The Full Journey of Sandpaper
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is always a third-party verified document that provides transparent data on a product’s environmental impact across its entire life cycle.
The data behind an EPD comes from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in other words the 'life story' of a product. For sandpaper, this includes everything from the extraction of raw materials, transport, and manufacturing to packaging, distribution, use (including energy or water consumed during sanding), and finally end-of-life treatment such as landfill or incineration.
The Role of a Pre-Verified LCA Tool for EPDs
So far, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in the abrasive industry have been developed without a pre-verified calculation tool. This means that methodologies, assumptions and data sources may vary between products, which can lead to inconsistencies and make comparisons more challenging.
A pre-verified LCA tool, on the other hand, ensures that all EPDs are based on the same approved methodology, improving consistency and comparability across products.
This is particularly valuable if you are working with data for sustainability reporting, procurement decisions, Scope 3 calculations or ESG platforms.
