Mirka Joins the European Remanufacturing Council

If you have ever made a New Year’s resolution, you know that achieving a desired change takes more than good intentions and lofty goals. It requires motivation and action. The same principle applies to sustainability, and that's why we're delighted to join the European Remanufacturing Council (ERC), an organisation that really has been putting in the work to promote remanufacturing for the past eight years.

About the ERC

The ERC is a coalition of manufacturers that wants to make remanufacturing a rational and economically viable part of product life cycles, whether those products are automotive parts, medical devices or printer cartridges. The ERC’s stated mission is to triple the value of Europe’s remanufacturing sector to €100 billion by 2030. This objective is an important step in creating an alternative to today’s linear economy. 

Customer Benefits and Climate Gains

Mats Bystedt, business development manager at Mirka, notes the significance of the collaboration with ERC and the general trend towards remanufacturing. 

‘Mirka’s process knowledge in surface finishing is a key enabler of profitable and sustainable remanufacturing. As in manufacturing, scalability is critical, yet significant work remains in automating surface-finishing processes for remanufacturing. Mirka aims to actively enable profitable, automated high-mix, low-volume remanufacturing.’

According to the European Remanufacturing Network – the EU-funded project that laid the foundation for ERC – remanufactured products are 20–40 per cent cheaper than newly manufactured ones, due to cost savings from the reuse of materials.

The ERC membership provides Mirka with a platform to collaborate with other leading companies, guiding the European industry towards increased remanufacturing and a lower climate footprint.
