The Untold Story of Abrasives' Environmental Impact

Mirka launches world’s first pre-verified LCA tool for generating EPDs for coated abrasives. A new step toward faster, more consistent, and more credible product environmental reporting at scale.
Every product has a journey, beginning with raw material extraction and continuing through transportation, manufacturing, distribution, use, and ultimately end of life. At each stage, decisions are made that shape its environmental impact, yet understanding and communicating that impact has not always been easy.
Until now, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in the abrasives industry have been developed without a pre‑verified calculation tool. As a result, methodologies, assumptions, and data sources may vary between products, leading to inconsistencies and making comparisons more challenging.
To address this challenge and bring greater transparency to the industry, Mirka has, through dedicated development work, received approval for the world’s first pre‑verified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool for generating EPDs for coated abrasive products.
This approval ensures that all Mirka’s EPDs generated using the tool are based on the same validated methodology, significantly improving consistency and comparability across products. This is particularly valuable for customers who rely on EPD data for sustainability reporting, procurement decisions, Scope 3 calculations, ESG platforms, and future Digital Product Passport requirements.
As a first result of this work, Mirka has published a third‑party‑verified EPD for the GOLD sanding disc. The EPD provides transparent insight into the product’s environmental impact across its entire life cycle, from production and use to end of life.

The approval of the pre-verified LCA tool positions Mirka, once again, as a forerunner in the surface finishing industry. It enables a shift from one-off product declarations to a scalable, consistent and high-credibility approach to environmental data.
